Door Handle Replacement
It's worth replacing door handles if you don't like the way they appear, or if they're difficult to use. Installing the new handle on your door is simple if you have patience.
Most modern door handles have cover plates that hide the screws to give them a beautiful appearance. If the new handle doesn't have screws already connected, you'll have to attach them separately.
Remove the old handle
Door handles are not only essential for aesthetics of your home but they're also vital for safety since they allow you to lock and unlock your door. Over time the door handle can become loose or feel loose. It could also appear worn out and old. This is a clear indication that it's time to replace the door handle.
One of the first signs that your door handle needs replacing is if it's becoming difficult to operate. This is a problem because it means that you can not lock or unlock your door which could create the risk of security for you and your family.

Another reason to replace your door handle is when it's damaged or broken. A broken door handle is dangerous, particularly for elderly and children members who may struggle to open it. They could be trapped. Fortunately, it's fairly simple to fix a damaged door handle by simply replacing the old one.
Modern door handles are generally standard sizes and will fit any door. If you are not certain if your new door handle will work, remove the old one and take measurements of its holes in the housing. This will allow you to purchase the correct size door handle.
The most straightforward method to take off the door handle you have been using is to take it off of the door itself. Usually, a screwdriver is used. Some door handles have a cover plate which hides the screws that mount them. You'll need to remove this to get to the screws. Once you've removed your old handle, make a note of how the spindle is positioned so that you can be sure to align it when you install your new one.
Alternatively, you can remove your door handle by unscrewing it from the latch mechanism. You can make use of a screwdriver to take off the door handle. However, you'll have to locate the small latch that is located on the edge trim piece. After you have removed the latch, remove the handle from the strike plate, and then remove the latch from the door edge.
The Strike Plate
You'll have to replace your latch plate after replacing the handle. It's the part that is the one that holds the hole in which the door's latch hooks in when the door closes. The new handles will come with two latch plates that are circular and rectangular plate (see the image above that shows the parts of a door handle). If your current latch plate has rectangular in shape, swap it to a round one, so that the latch is able to hook into the strike plate in a manner that makes the handle easier to operate.
The first step is to remove the screw that holds the latch plate in place. The screws can be very tight, and will require some force to loosen. It is helpful to have a second person assist with this task if you can.
The latch plate should easily be removed from the door once the screws have been removed. If it's stuck or won't move using a nail file to scrape the edges of the latch plate. This may help free the plate up.
Now you can prepare the new strike plate to be installed. Install the latch plate in the door jamb using the screws that were included with your new handles. Do not tighten the screws too much as this could damage the strike plate.
If you're unsure whether the latch plate is in the correct position, shut and open the door to check whether it locks and closes properly. If it does not you'll have to adjust the strikeplate upwards or down, forward or back until the door locks correctly.
If the door continues to move or jiggles, then you may need to increase the size of your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more common with older doors, but could be due to wear and tear hinge mortises that are too shallow or not the right size for the latch, or from damage or a broken strike plate. If this is the case, follow the same procedure for adjusting the strike plate, but with a metal file instead of an hammer and chisel.
Eliminating the Latch
The latch is the angled piece of metal that is able to move through the hole on the inside edge of your door. The latch is moved forward when you turn the handle. It also hooks into an opening in the door frame so that the door remains closed. If your door is wobbling when you close it, an upgrade to the latch could be the only thing needed to fix the issue.
The screws that hold the door latch are difficult to see however, you can insert a screwdriver into an insignificant hole on the trim plate, and then pull the latch off. After removal of the trim plate you will be able to pull off the latch, as well as the bolts that hold it, as well as the spindle.
If the latch cannot be easily removed using a paperclip or tool to take it off the handle mechanism. Place wimbledon upvc door handle repairs into the recessed latch slot and then gently twist or jiggle until you feel that the latch and handle are beginning to break off. It may take this several times before the latch becomes loose enough to let it out.
After the old latch has been removed it should be possible to slide the new latch into the slot without difficulties. Make use of the new screws to attach the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it is properly positioned in the slot and aligned with the screw chambers.
Before installing the new handle, be sure to measure your current backset (the distance from the center of the large hole on the front surface of the door to the edge). Also, ensure that the latch size on the new handle is a good match to this measurement.
If you are replacing the handle or latch or handle, or if the old lock cylinder is damaged then you'll require a new one. If you're not changing the locks the new latch will fit in your existing recess and will be compatible with your current keys. Make sure you select a latch with a rectangular cover plate that match your old handles.
